Third QLUSTER training course series

The third series of training course took place in Roma, Italy, on July 24-25 2024.

The Advanced Training Module T5 was organized so as to provide the participants with fundamental concepts of slow dynamics in soft matter systems, focusing in the glass and gel transitions and in polymer dynamics. The covered topics included the Mode Coupling Theory, dynamic heterogeneities, the role of thermodynamics in the glass transition, the Rouse model and the reptation theory.

Summer School on “Topology and Materials”

QLUSTER Summer School took place July 17-22 (2024) at the Villa Monastero in Varenna, Italy. It was attended by all 9 QLUSTER students and 39 other international students.

Goal

The Summer School, which was open to the whole community and counted 48 participants in addition to the 12 lecturers and the 5 directors, covered the following topics:

  • Mathematical fundamentals and topological geometry
  • Topological polymers: classification, structure, dynamics and rheology
  • Knots and links in Physics and Biology
  • DNA topology and function
  • Topological defects in liquid crystals
  • Topological colloids
  • Topological quantum number
  • Topological insulators
  • Topological Quantum Chemistry
  • Topology in interacting systems

Second QLUSTER training course series

The second series of training course took place in Heraklion, Crete, on April 15-17 2024.

The Transferable Skills Course S2 was organized so as to provide the participants with an insight into the way a presentation and a research paper are structured, what key points to consider, tips for a comprehensive presentation or well received paper, tips on how to address specific audience, how to focus on the punchline of the work. Examples of good and bad presentations or papers were given and the different problems discussed.

The Advanced Training Module T2 was organized so as to provide the participants with the basic properties of soft materials and the experimental methods and protocols used to probe them. The lectures focused on rheology (linear and nonlinear viscoelasticity) and scattering (with emphasis on X-ray and light scattering), with applications to polymers, colloidal gels, glasses and pastes.

First QLUSTER training course series

QLUSTER students followed their first training courses in Ljubljana last week (Feb. 12-15). Monday February 12 they started with Transferable Skills Course: Scientific Data Presentation and Visualization give by Aljaž Vindiš. After our consortium meeting on Tuesday, they continued with their first scientific training course Advanced Concepts in Soft Matter given by Christos Likos on Wednesday and Thursday.

Consortium meeting year 1 - Ljubljana

The University of Ljubljana will be the host for our first QLUSTER consortium meeting on February 13, 2024. In addition to this one day meeting, our students will spend three days in training activities, February 12 and 15-16, together doing various courses. Monday they will attend a Transferable Skills course, focused on visualizing and presenting scientific data. Wednesday and Thursday they will attend a course on Advanced Concepts in Soft Matter, given by Christos Likos, our PI from Vienna University.
